Capoeira Sol Nascente got its start in Long Branch in 2002, bringing the energy and beauty of Afro-Brazilian capoeira to Monmouth and Ocean counties through cultural festivals and neighborhood workshops. Kasey Sanders, known to most as Baiano, leads the group as a martial artist who also performs as a musician and singer. Their work remains connected to Mestre Romeu’s Capoeira Sol Nascente in Brazil, keeping the group’s movement and music tied to the form’s roots – a combination of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music – while adding its own unique flair and artistry to the artform.
